We all met in the morning, in the lobby of Holiday Inn Express in New Orleans. Staying in a hotel is a great opportunity to completely unpack your suitcase and repack it again. Things like this you really appreciate after camping day after day. We were really excited today because we were going on the swamp tour!
*On May 29th 2019, I travelled with Trek America on their Grand Trek tour for six weeks around the USA. We began in New York, travelling south to the West Coast, then North back to the East Coast. I am not affiliated with Trek America. Read all my Trek America posts here. *
Honey Island Swamp Tour
We visited Dr Wagners Honey Island Swamp Tours and honestly, I was so impressed. I didn’t really have any expectations and hadn’t researched beforehand what it would be like.
Our guide was extremely friendly and interactive, always giving opportunities for us to ask questions.
At the beginning of the tour, your guide will give you lots of information about the swamp and things you can expect to see. For a while, I was wondering if we would actually see any alligators. Luckily, the guides have ways of bringing them closer to the boat – who knew alligators would like marshmallows?!
It was so surreal to see an alligator so close to the boat, something I never thought I would see! Trek America makes so many of these experiences possible in one trip.
The tour lasts between an hour and a half to two hours. In this time you halt in some areas and have time to look around and ask your guide questions. Other times you are heading high speed to another area of the swamp. Overall, it was really interesting and a beautiful landscape to explore, plus lots of wildlife to spot. I would love to do another tour in future. For $25 per person, it’s definitely not something to be missed.
Lafayette KOA
After the tour, we made our way to Lafayette KOA for the evening. We had the perfect site, right next to the laundry & toilets. Everyone spent the afternoon doing different things, I just had a nice bit of chill out time, reading my kindle.
Sunset by the lake
Later on we headed to the Lake to watch the sunset. Another moment where we all just sat with the realisation that we were all in the USA, travelling with people that had become like family.
That night was VERY WARM, some of our group ended up sleeping in the laundry room – as you do haha! Somehow I managed to fall in asleep in our tent despite the ridiculous temperature. The good thing about being so busy all the time was that we fell asleep so easily at night.
